内容简介:
Conventional water and wastewater treatment technologies have limitations when addressing micropollutants of emerging concern, such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) that are bioactive at very low concentrations. Our recent studies demonstrated that enzyme catalyzed oxidative humification reactions (ECOHRs) may provide an alternative approach to effectively remove micropollutants from water and soil. ECOHRs involve catalysis by enzymes having specific binding capacities for both the micropollutants and the oxidants (O2, H2O2), so that the processes are efficient to remove low-concentration contaminants, requiring less oxidant and energy input. When there is appropriate mediators present, ECOHRs can also degrade persistent organic pollutants, such as perfluorochemicals, a class of chemicals of emerging regulatory and public concerns. Possible combinations of electro/enzyme/coagulation systems for wastewater treatment will also be discussed.
